Royal Retains The Micheal Gunaratne Trophy

The Micheal Gunaratne Trophy; although less talked about-plays a great part in the motivation and spirit of a Royal Ruggerite. The efforts taken by the team this year proved fruitful as they emerged victors against S. Thomas College at their home ground. Although both teams had performed well this season, the Royal side entered the field with the statistics in their favour.

Center Janidu Dilshan set the tone for the evening by drawing first blood in spectacular fashion. After Shakir Nawfers conversion the score stood 7 – 0. The Thomians in good Royal – Thomian spirit made a strong statement with a try. Soon the score was at an even 7 all. The Royal side strategically played a weak Thomian defense to their favour with another try by Sabith Feroze. A frenzy of penalties and near tries ensued thereafter, with the dust settling the match went into half time with the Thomians securing a marginal 2 point lead.

The second half began with a score of 12 – 14 in S. Thomas College favour. The second half was dominated by Royal grit. Royal College scored thrice but alas failed to concede a single extra point. This did not hinder the results of the game however as the Royal defense prevented the Thomian outfit from making a comeback. Sabith won the respect of all present by bagging to trys in the second half.

The final whistle was blown with Royal College bringing home the Micheal Guneratne Trophy on the 29th of April 2017. The final score of 31 – 14 testified to the skill of this Royal side.
